Partnership Working
The Pasture Masters work with several local and national organisations to manage the pastures.
They work with the Golf Club and Race Course to support events and authorise any necessary improvements.
We also work alongside utility companies to ensure gas connections and electricity cables are maintained, this is in collaboration with East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The Pasture Masters also work in partnership with Natural England and the Forestry Commission. We are currently working with them to manage and maintain the Burton Bushes on Westwood.
We also work with local tradespeople to help to look after the pastures, in particular with fencing and tree management.
Working with Forestart – Annual Hawthorn berry collection on Swinemoor and Figham
Annually we give permission to Forestart to collect Hawthorn berries on Swinemoor and Figham.
The Hawthorn seed collection at Swinemoor and Figham is for the provision of seed for tree nurseries & tree planting around the UK. Seed collections provide a vital resource for both commercial & conservation planting efforts and in achieving tree planting targets.
Forestart follow stringent guidelines to ensure they do not collect more seed than is acceptable with a given area and to avoid impacting local wildlife.
The collection at Swinemoor and Figham is the only collection taking place within a 60-mile radius and represents a tiny proportion of the hawthorn seed available, both immediately up and down stream from this site is a plethora of berries.
Within the site the team will only collect from Hawthorn bushes which are safely accessible, meaning a good percentage of the site will not be picked as it is too wet to safely/effectively collect from, this seed is then left for local wildlife.
Hawthorn is a bulky seed, collected with a reasonable proportion of leaf. At this particular site, due to the size and limited access, the seed tends to be moved in batches – meaning it can appear as a large procession of material leaving the area at one time.
Please be assured that Forestart take great efforts to ensure no negative impact on wildlife occurs.
